5 Costly Mistakes People Make
When Choosing Health Insurance

Most people spend less than 20 minutes choosing a plan that costs them thousands. Here is how to not be one of them.

Let me be direct with you. Most people pick a health insurance plan the same way they pick a seat on an airplane. They go with whatever looks cheapest and hope for the best.

Then life happens. A specialist visit. An unexpected procedure. And suddenly that affordable plan turns into a $4,000 surprise because nobody explained what out-of-pocket maximums, network restrictions, and referral requirements actually mean.

I am Dan, an independent insurance broker based in Fort Myers, Florida. I have helped hundreds of families across Southwest Florida navigate this. These are the five mistakes I see constantly, and exactly how to avoid them.

The 5 Mistakes

Each one can cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars. All of them are completely avoidable.

Mistake #1

Choosing Based on the Monthly Premium Alone

This is the number one mistake. People see a $180 per month plan and a $340 per month plan and immediately pick the cheaper one. What they do not look at is the deductible. The amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in.

That $180 per month plan might have a $7,000 deductible. The $340 per month plan might have a $1,500 deductible. If you need any real medical care that year, the cheap plan ends up costing you dramatically more.

The real number to look at is total annual cost. Monthly premium times 12, plus your realistic out-of-pocket costs. A plan that costs $160 more per month but has a $4,000 lower deductible is almost always the better deal if you actually use your insurance.

This is exactly why working with an independent broker like Dan makes a difference. We run this calculation for you across every plan before making a recommendation.

Real example: A client came to me after choosing the cheapest plan available. Six months later they needed knee surgery. Their deductible was $8,500. The plan I would have recommended had a $1,500 deductible and cost only $90 more per month. That is a $6,000 difference for $540 in extra premiums.

Always compare total annual cost, not just the monthly premium

Mistake #2

Not Checking If Your Doctors Are In-Network

You have had the same doctor for five years. You like them. You trust them. So you pick a plan without checking if that doctor actually accepts it.

This is an incredibly common mistake and it stings. Seeing an out-of-network doctor on an HMO plan can mean your insurance covers exactly $0 of the bill. On a PPO plan, you will at least get partial coverage, but still significantly less than in-network rates.

With Private PPO Plans, you have access to large nationwide networks and the ability to see specialists directly without a referral. This is especially important for families in Naples, Estero, and Cape Coral where people often split time between multiple areas.

What I do for every client: Before you enroll in anything, I verify that your preferred doctors, specialists, and hospitals accept the plan. It takes me 20 minutes and it has saved clients from some very unpleasant billing surprises.

Always verify doctor networks before enrolling, every single year

Mistake #3

Assuming the Government Marketplace Is Always the Best Option

ACA Marketplace plans are excellent for people who qualify for income-based subsidies. If your income qualifies, you could get comprehensive coverage for very low cost, sometimes $0 per month. That is genuinely remarkable and worth exploring.

But if you do not qualify for subsidies, or if your income is above the threshold, you may be paying full ACA rates for a plan with a narrow network, referral requirements, and limited enrollment windows. In that case, a Private PPO Plan often gives you more flexibility, broader provider access, and year-round enrollment at comparable or lower total cost.

The mistake is assuming one is always better. The right answer depends on your income, your family’s health needs, your preferred doctors, and how much flexibility you want. That analysis is exactly what I do for every client for free. You can read more about how we compare both options on our FAQ page.

Bottom line: I offer both Private PPO Plans and ACA Marketplace plans. I have no reason to push you toward one or the other. My job is to show you both options side by side and help you pick the one that saves you the most money while covering your doctors.

Compare both options before deciding. They serve different situations.

Mistake #4

Waiting Until Open Enrollment to Get Coverage

A lot of people believe they can only get health insurance during open enrollment from November through January. So when life changes, they quit a job, go self-employed, move to a new state, start a family, they think they are stuck waiting months for coverage.

This is not true for private health insurance. Private PPO Plans are available year-round. You can apply today and often have coverage within days or weeks. No waiting periods. No annual enrollment windows.

This matters most for self-employed professionals and 1099 contractors across Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Sarasota who need coverage that moves with their career, not with a government calendar.

ACA plans do have enrollment windows, but qualifying life events such as job loss, marriage, birth of a child, or relocation trigger a Special Enrollment Period that gives you 60 days to sign up.

I hear this constantly: I thought I had to wait until November. You do not. Private plans can get you covered in days. Do not spend another month uninsured when you do not have to.

Private PPO Plans are available 365 days a year. No waiting.

Mistake #5

Doing It Alone Without an Independent Broker

Insurance company websites are designed to sell you their products. Healthcare.gov shows you government plans only. When you go directly to any single source, you are getting a filtered, incomplete picture of what is available to you.

An independent broker like Dan is not tied to any single insurer. We have access to plans across multiple top-rated options and we are legally obligated to act in your best interest, not a company’s sales quota. We compare options across the market to find what actually fits your situation.

And here is the part people do not realize. Using an independent broker costs you nothing. Brokers are paid by the insurance carriers, not by clients. You get expert guidance, plan comparison, doctor network verification, enrollment support, and ongoing service completely free of charge.

We serve families and professionals across Fort Myers, Naples, Estero, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, and Jacksonville β€” all at no cost to you.

Think of it this way: You would not buy a house without a real estate agent who works in your interest. Your health coverage deserves the same expert, personalized guidance β€” especially when it costs you nothing extra to get it.

Working with an independent broker is free and always gets you better results
